THE KELLEY DIFFERENCE
Kelley Steel has hand-picked the region’s finest job superintendents and project managers, each of whom has more than 20 years of experience on all types of steel work. We never have to go looking for talent. We have the best people on our permanent staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Our attitude and the way we approach each project make us different. We approach every project with the mindset of a builder, first planning the project with the construction of the building in mind, and then working back through erection, fabrication, project management and design.
When we take on a project, we see more than just design documents, engineering, logistics and ironworkers. We see the opportunity to be the leader in driving the evolution of the building industry.
People are the key to our success at Kelley Steel. Now in our sixth decade, we are a company whose growth is driven by a select team of industry leaders. Working with this group are teams of planners and builders who bring life to each of our projects.
We use union labor exclusively, and we have excellent relationships with all the trade unions. We don’t apologize for setting high standards. Those who work for us know we demand a full day’s work, even in the most challenging weather.
We employ ironworkers, boilermakers, pipefitters, sheet metal workers, operating engineers, millwrights, carpenters, laborers and teamsters. We value them for their skill and dedication, knowing that they are working hard for their families. That’s why so many of them prefer to work for Kelley Steel – we always have work.
We go out of our way to be more than fair.
Mutual respect and hard work are key to both the company and the unions achieving success. Over the years we’ve learned that the best workers always prefer to work for the best companies. And the best workers work for Kelley.
We employ a diverse group of vendors and subcontractors, including those that qualify as Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (WBE). From the work site to the boardroom, Kelley Steel seeks out and hires the most qualified people and partners, in both experience and character, for the specific needs of our clients.
Given our roots as a family business, Kelley Steel has maintained this culture with our employees, partners and customers. We honor and value honest communication, teamwork and mutual support and strive to build lasting relationships with our many customers.
We go out of our way to be more than fair. The Golden Rule goes a long way in business.
SETTING THE PACE OF CONSTRUCTION
What other companies consider impossible, we accomplish daily. The steel erector sets the pace for the job, so we bring urgency to every project. Nothing can happen until the steel goes up. This is what we know best. It’s what we’ve always done. We are experts.
We routinely out-produce our competitors, getting more done with fewer shifts and fewer men, often under brutally difficult circumstances. The work we do is dirty, difficult, and dangerous. Our work is not for the faint of heart.
With so much at stake, there is no place for amateurs in this business. We know because we’ve been brought in to clean up and take over our competitor’s work in order to get projects back on schedule.
IT STARTS WITH QUALITY ESTIMATING
The process Kelley Steel uses to develop a project estimate reflects the way we do business. We know the job better than our competitors because we spend the time and money to do our homework. We go out of our way to be responsive to the needs of the steel fabricator, general contractor or owner that brought us into a project.
Construction projects involve much more than building. The process can be disruptive for a business, unsettling and uncomfortable for its employees. Because we are often working in or around an active environment, we redouble our efforts to be as considerate as possible to the company’s operations. We are always sensitive to the constraints of our customers and contractors.
Estimating is a multi-step process that in its simplest form contains the following elements:
– Acquiring bid documents, such as drawings and specifications
– Developing a highly detailed take-off with a complete listing of all work items
– Developing a detailed plan to accomplish the work
– Developing a cost model to ensure that the above plan fits the owner’s scheduling requirements as well as any job site or process constraints
We use the estimating process to determine what’s required to build the project as efficiently as possible. We collaborate with the general contractor to identify potential problems and to recommend alternative procedures and solutions. We take the time to prepare the most accurate and comprehensive estimate possible, given the project deadline and the documents provided.
Every project has challenges, and these are where we excel by bringing our team together to research, brainstorm and skillfully devise innovative solutions that bring a project to completion. No challenge is too great – no problem is insurmountable.
Kelley Steel is nationally known for its skill and expertise. We develop solutions that enable sophisticated builds and set new benchmarks. We make good on our promises. To put it bluntly, we get the job done.

UNPARALLELED RESPONSIVENESS TO CLIENT NEEDS
When a company is dealing with an emergency or when time is critical, we often get the first call, evidence of expertise above and beyond our competition. What follows are real-life examples of how we met the owner’s and contractor’s needs when time was critical, committing our full resources on a moment’s notice to get production up and running as quickly as possible:
– Assembled a large workforce on short notice in order to accelerate the completion of critical maintenance work during a scheduled shutdown at a large Cleveland steel plant
– Completed work in mere days and well ahead of schedule so as not to impede production at a pharmaceutical company that makes life-saving cancer drugs

– Completed a MetroHealth Hospital expansion to the emergency department in time for the Republican National Convention
